Technical Checklist: Factors that Dictate Your Nodulizer Selection


In ductile iron production, there is no "one-size-fits-all" nodulizer. Choosing the wrong grade can lead to slag inclusions, gas holes, or failed nodularity. To achieve a stable process, you must evaluate your base iron conditions against the technical specifications of your FeSiMg alloys.

1. Molten Iron Weight vs. Particle Size

The weight of the iron in your ladle dictates the required surface area of the nodulizer:

* For < 500kg: Smaller particle sizes like 5-15mm or 5-20mm are recommended to ensure rapid and uniform reaction.

* For > 500kg: Larger sizes such as 5-25mm or 5-30mm provide a more controlled, prolonged reaction for larger volumes.

2. Temperature Control: The "Sweet Spot"

Temperature is the most critical variable for Magnesium (Mg) absorption:

* The Reaction Window: Standard spheroidization treatment is most effective between 1440°C and 1520°C.

* High-Temperature Challenges: If your treatment temperature exceeds 1550°C, the Mg vapor pressure increases, causing a more violent reaction. In these cases, a nodulizer with lower Mg content (e.g., Mg < 5.5%) should be used to ensure a smoother reaction.

3. Chemistry: Sulfur and Rare Earth (RE) Balance

The chemical composition of your base iron determines the RE and Mg requirements:

* High Sulfur (S) Issues: When sulfur content is high (S > 0.03%), you must use a nodulizer with Higher RE and Mg content to neutralize the sulfur before spheroidization begins.

* Interfering Elements: If your iron contains high levels of V, Cr, Ti, or Pb, a nodulizer with higher Rare Earth content (like our 8-5 or 8-7 series) is necessary to counteract their negative effects.

* Pearlitic vs. Ferritic: For Ferritic nodular cast iron, Low RE nodulizers are preferred to avoid unwanted carbides.

4. Cooling Rates and Section Thickness

* Fast Cooling (Metal Mold): Low RE and Low Mg nodulizers are typically sufficient for smooth reactions.

* Slow Cooling (Thick Sections): For heavy castings prone to graphite degradation, Yttrium-based heavy RE nodulizers are the superior choice to delay fading.
